Date published: 25 April 2018

A coroner has ruled that an 11-year-old girl died as a result of a road traffic collision.

11-year-old Iman Zainab Javed, from Rochdale, was tragically killed in a collision on the M61 motorway on 23 January 2017.

An inquest into Iman’s death at Preston Coroner’s Court, concluded that the schoolgirl died from severe facial injuries and a fractured neck.

Hundreds of people turned out to pay their respects at Neeli Mosque for the young girl’s funeral.

Iman and her father, Javed Iqbal, were travelling southbound on the M61 in a Volkswagen Sharan and were involved in a collision with a Renault Clio, also travelling southbound, near Junction 9 at 10.30pm. A Volvo HGV then crashed into both vehicles.

Iman suffered serious injuries and she died at the scene. Three other passengers from the Sharan were also injured during the crash, with the occupants of the other vehicles unhurt.

Mr Iqbal, in his 40s, was taken to hospital in a critical condition after also receiving serious injuries.
