Residents on The Green, in Castleton, are desperate for a ‘No Through Road’ sign to be installed at the entrance to The Green from Royle Road after the latest of what are frequent incidents saw a double trailer lorry/unit nearly take out a garden wall.

Drivers and walkers turn into the small estate expecting to find industrial and warehouse units or a short cut through to Manchester Road.

Madge Helliwell a resident on The Green says: “There is a constant steam of vehicles that come up on to the estate and end up turning round and going out again.

“We have people knocking on the door asking where the footpath is to get to Manchester Road.

“Far worse are the vans and articulated lorries which come up the street and realise that they have taken the wrong road and then try to turn round.

“The most serious incident was last Friday when a double trailer unit came up the street, and then couldn’t turn round.

“We had to come out of the house and tell him to stop as he was about to knock our wall down as he tried to turn.

“All we need is a ‘No Through Road’ sign - they are turning right, instead of left from Royle Road to get to the industrial estate which is across the road.”

Castleton Ward Councillor Aasim Rashid has contacted the council to ask them to put a sign up, he said: “Residents living on The Green in Castleton are facing a major issue as heavy goods vehicles are taking a wrong turning from Royle Road causing a serious health and safety issue.

“Residents on The Green say they have requested Council Highways to put signage up to help stop this happening.

“I will request Highways to look into this matter as a priority issue.

“It is not acceptable that we put local residents and properties at risk.”

Councillor Rashid promised the sign would be paid for via Castleton ward funds if necessary.

Andrew Storey, head of highways at Rochdale Borough Council, said: “Residents who would like to request new street signs, or have any other issues regarding highways or footpaths in their local area, are asked to email us at highways@rochdale.gov.uk, and we will look into it.”
