Smithy Bridge Road closed

Date published: 23 August 2018

Smithy Bridge Road is closed at the level crossing again today, Thursday 23 August.

The barriers at the level crossing are understood to have been broken since around 10am, and it is not yet known when the road will reopen.

Former councillor Jean Ashworth said: “Yet again the barriers are broken at Smithybridge Railway and have been since before 10am today.

“The police are at the top of Smithybridge Road, stopping traffic going through and sending everyone round the Lake.

“Then when you get to Wildhouse Lane, traffic management are there with Stop & Go signs sending everyone down Wildhouse Lane: it’s a nightmare and the police are saying it could be five hours or more before it is sorted!

“When are these barriers going to be taken seriously or does someone have to be injured or killed before something is done?

“If you go the other way, the roundabout at Albert Royds Street is another nightmare trying to get to Rochdale with the roadworks near Red Lane. It’s a mess!”
