Sean is a Star in the Making

Last year Sean Caffrey successfully auditioned for the role of ‘Nathan’ in The Full Monty which was produced by Rochdale Musical Theatre Company. He has now been nominated for the ‘best young performer in a musical’ in the North West Spotlight Theatre Awards. The result will be announced in November.

ADOREMUS National Youth Congress

A group of St Cuthbert’s pupils, many of whom are Pupil Chaplains, Caritas Ambassadors or members of our Music Liturgy Group, joined hundreds of other young people in Liverpool on Saturday at the National Youth Congress. They travelled together from school by coach with our friends from Sacred Heart & Holy Family Parish and were fabulous ambassadors for our school community. They were joined by Mrs Ansley, Miss Lally, Sister Noel and Clare & Rachel, helpers from the parish who are also St Cuthbert’s past pupils.

The event began with time to visit stalls, play ice breaker games and chat to new friends before the Opening Liturgy and welcome from Archbishop Malcolm McMahon. The theme of the day was “I Am The Bread of Life”, which helped us to focus on the Real Presence of Jesus in our lives.

Guest speakers included Cardinal Vincent Nichols, the Head of the Catholic Church in England and Wales and Katie Prejean from the USA who used funny stories from her own life to tell us how much we are loved by God. Music was provided throughout the day by Jo Boyce. Our group sang and danced their hearts out, even joining in with a conga around the auditorium after lunch!

This was followed by a workshop from Animate, the Archdiocese of Liverpool’s youth service, who used drama and music to help us remember that the Bread of Life is our food for the challenges we face as we grow up.

Towards the end of the afternoon many of our young people took the opportunity to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation (Confession) during the Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament, when we were all invited to spend quiet time bringing our personal thoughts and prayers before the Lord.

Expressive Arts - school show

Congratulations to all those pupils who have passed their audition for the school production of Cinderella. There are already over 100 pupils involved not including Year 7 who will be auditioning next week! The Arts are certainly alive and well at St Cuthbert's! The cast list for main parts has now been announced. Rehearsal times will be posted each week and will also be on the screens in school. The Expressive Arts staff are extremely proud of these pupils and can't wait to get started on rehearsals.

Students Experience University Life

Last week 70 Year 11 students visited Salford University for the day. After a presentation in the lecture theatre students took part in workshops, delivered presentations, had a campus tour and were treated to lunch in the Maxwell building at the University.

The workshops included discussions about university courses and various pathways. Presentations outlined the differences between Higher Education, Colleges and Vocational Courses. Later in the day the students created a pitch to entice University students to become part of their own “Society”. Students delivered their presentations with real enthusiasm and were rewarded with Salford University branded chocolates! Gabriella Law Mantelvanos said: “It was an eye opening experience which gave me a real insight into university life.”
