Centenary memorial at site of former Providence Church

Date published: 19 October 2018

Middleton’s Market Place has received a moving centenary tribute at the site of the former Providence Church.

Created by Ros Liddle and Jan Eaton-Dykes, and assisted by many Middletonians, the magnificent creation features two silent soldier silhouettes, plus a floral carpet of poppies around their feet as a third soldier carrier their fallen comrade.

Middleton residents have shared their approval of the tribute ahead of the World War One centenary next month.

Kevin Poole said: “Respect to you for doing this; I hope the respect for our fallen heroes in war are never forgotten.”

James Lowe added: “It’s very memorable and moving.”

Veteran Paul Bennett commented: “ I was born and raised in Middleton, leaving at age 19 to join the army. I served for 25 years and lost a few good mates along the way. Gestures like this mean a great deal to veterans: the fact that this has been done in my home town gives me an enormous sense of pride. Thank you.”

Sue Hannelly added: “So proud of all the recognition Middleton is giving to our boys and men who paid the ultimate sacrifice and never came home. Thank you to all those involved in the stunning tributes around Middleton.”
