Smallbridge Foodbank opens its doors

Date published: 30 October 2018

The work of foodbanks across the country has been much in the news of late, and certainly the Trussell Trust Foodbank in the centre of Rochdale has been increasingly busy in recent months. Now there is more good news for anyone in desperate need of food, particularly in the Smallbridge area, where an extension of the foodbank has opened its doors.

The new centre will be open between 10.30am and 12.00 noon every Saturday at Number 1 Wesley Street in Smallbridge, home of the Christian Fellowship. A warm welcome will be certain for anyone in real need who comes with a red voucher issued by one of the huge number (currently 153) of agencies across the Borough of Rochdale who now work in collaboration with the foodbank.

Ruth Pringle is heading up the enthusiastic team of volunteers who will be running the Smallbridge Centre.

She said: “We are delighted to be offering this opportunity for families, hungry through no fault of their own, to receive food over the weekend.

“We are being given support from the main foodbank in Rochdale and from new supporters such as Reuse Littleborough, who have already collected food for us. As a Christian charity, we are very keen to offer this service to our local community.”

Iain Wight, leader of Rochdale’s Foodbank, which has now been opening its doors every weekday morning for six years, said: “I welcome this new centre and I am particularly delighted that this Saturday morning initiative enables us to extend our service to the people of Rochdale to six days a week.”
