Ella Chadwick wins Pride of Britain award

Date published: 31 October 2018

Young fundraiser Ella Chadwick has been recognised for her bravery by winning a Pride of Britain award on Monday (29 October).

11-year-old Ella, from Whitworth, was born with a rare kidney disease, Congenital Nephrotic Syndrome, surviving 40 gruelling operations in her first six years before having a lifesaving kidney donated from her grandmother.

She was forced to have both of her kidneys removed and, up until her life-saving transplant, she faced weekly hospital trips for dialysis at the Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital.

After her transplant in May 2014, Ella suffered from mobility problems and had to learn how to support herself on her feet.

Even after her tough start in life, Ella has never let that stop her, pouring all of her determined efforts into supporting the charity and raising funds to help other sick children.

Ella was presented with the Child of Courage Award at Monday night’s ceremony in London, which will be televised on ITV on 6 November.

Her proud mum, Karen Hughes said: “It was the most amazing night ever; Ella stole the show.”

And steal it she did, as Ella rubbed shoulders with a number of celebrities on the night, including Simon Cowell, Robbie Williams and Peter Andre.

Since her prestigious award win, Ella has been featured on Granada Reports, Jeremy Vine on 5, BBC News plus the front page of award partner, The Daily Mirror.

Over the past few years, Ella has taken part in the Junior and Mini Great Manchester Run in Manchester city centre, going one step further on her 10th birthday last September in setting herself a mammoth challenge to run a total 10k distance before she turned 11.

Last year, Ella won a Pride of Sport Award, honouring those who have gone the extra mile to help others achieve their goals and who have triumphed against adversity.
