Dual role for Whitworth students at joint band concert

Two musicians from Whitworth Community High School will have a dual role in a forthcoming school concert at The Riverside.

The school’s band and 2nd Rossendale Scout Group Band will be performing a joint concert at The Riverside, Whitworth, on Wednesday 27 February.

Sam Booth, 15, and Josh Dunning 14, will not only be playing with the school band, they will also play with the Scouts as they are members of both.

Sam, who plays a front row cornet with the Scout Band, said: “I have played with the Scout Band for about 10 years and I enjoy it because I like music and it is fun.”

He said they had been practising several numbers for the concert including ‘Thunder Calls, ‘I Dreamed a Dream’, ‘Hymn for Africa’ and a rendition of ‘This is Me’ which will be performed by both bands together.

Josh plays euphonium in both bands and has been with the Scout Band for five years.

He said: “I like music and I also like our musical director Graham Helm. We are also going to be playing the ‘Can Can’ where my instrument plays a leading role in the music.”

Tickets for the event will be available from the school on 01706 343218.

The event was planned to be held in school, but has now been switched to The Riverside on the same night because of a flood in the school hall.
