Rochdale Council of Mosques raises over £21,000 for Rochdale Mayor's Charity Appeal

Date published: 24 April 2019

The Rochdale Council of Mosques (RCM) raised a staggering £21,600 for the Rochdale Mayor's Charity Appeal at the RCM Annual Dinner, in collaboration with the Al-Mahmood Foundation, held at Rochdale Town Hall on Thursday 18 April.

The RCM holds a dinner every year and raises thousands of pounds for good causes, this year it chose the Rochdale Mayor's Charity Appeal so that the proceeds could benefit local causes.

The Mayor Mohammed Zaman and his daughter, Mayoress Naaira Zaman, are raising money for six charities this year: Springhill Hospice, Petrus, Parkinson's UK, Rochdale Community Partnership, Moor End Trust and British Heart Foundation.

The event was initially conducted by Dobir Miah, former CEO and now an advisor to the RCM, followed by comedian Mani Liaquat.

Nasheed artist Amina Sultani recited from the holy Qur'an and later entertained the 300+ crowd with beautiful nasheeds, including the Arabic version of hallelujah.

A three-course meal was served in between the entertainment and auction.

Mayor Mohammed Zaman said: “I wish to thank the Rochdale Council of Mosques and Al-Mahmood Foundation and, and in particular, their Chair, Tahir Mahmood, for organising this dinner and choosing my appeal as the recipient. I am absolutely overwhelmed with the amount raised.

"I know that the Muslim community in Rochdale raise huge amounts for charities, and do a lot of work to build bridges and cohesion in the borough, they have raised thousands and have helped so many causes both here in Rochdale and abroad including a staggering £160,000 last year with the Rohingya Appeal for the refugees who have been stranded in Bangladesh.

"I am ever so grateful to the communities of Rochdale, businesses and sponsors who have made generous contributions, the monies raised tonight will go a long way to supporting these charities.”

Chair of the RCM, Tahir Mahmood said: “I am as always very grateful to all the generous people that came along this evening and help us raise so much money for great local causes.

"This is testament that the people of Rochdale are caring and very generous despite us being in tough times and adds value to the many good works we do for all our communities in the borough of Rochdale.

"Can I thank all my colleagues and our volunteers for putting this event together, and of course I am extremely grateful to all our sponsors, without whom this event wouldn’t have been possible.”

At the end of the night a cheque was presented to Mayor Zaman by members of Rochdale Council of Mosques and the Al-Mahmood Foundation.
