Volunteers needed for this year’s Norden Carnival

Date published: 24 April 2019

Volunteers and committee members are urgently needed to ensure the beloved Norden Carnival goes ahead on Saturday 15 June.

Norden Carnival was established in 1977 and has taken place every June as a charity fundraising event. It features a parade alongside a funfair, food and drinks, live music, plus a variety of craft stalls and fabulous raffle prizes.

However, the Carnival Committee needs volunteers to both help on the day and committee members, or the event is in danger of not going ahead as planned.

A spokesperson for the group said: “We are in urgent need of volunteers and committee members or else we will be struggling to go ahead with this year’s carnival, and next year’s will not take place.

“Due to the resignation of our chairman, it is a dwindling group of volunteers left to organise this year’s event. We have all been involved for many years, work full time and our children are now adults. As we had no new volunteers this year, we have continued to be involved but would all prefer to take a back seat.”

Following a change in family circumstances, chairman Paul Ellison has handed in his resignation.

He said: “I’m sorry to be leaving. As this was the most recent thing I had become involved with, it only made sense for this to be the one I had to let go. All my other community commitments will not be affected by this.

“The carnival is a great event and I wish the committee all the best.”

Anyone wishing to help save Norden Carnival by getting involved as a committee member or helping on the day is welcome to join the committee at their next meeting on Tuesday 30 April 7pm at The Bridge pub.
