St George's Day and Gallipoli dinner raises over £970 for charity

Date published: 30 April 2019

A Rochdale veteran has raised over £970 for charity with a special St George's Day and Gallipoli dinner.

Guests enjoyed a meal from the Quirky Kitchen Company, as well as an evening of entertainment on Saturday 20 April.

Kevin Hughes, of the Rochdale Fusiliers Association, hosted the dinner at Rochdale AFC, raising just over £485 each for Rochdale and District Mind and The Gallipoli Project, ensuring that younger generations know about the profound local effect of the war.

Mr Hughes said: “I was given an enormous number of gifts and vouchers from companies all over Rochdale. There are too many to mention but I am very appreciative.

“I am hoping to host this memorable dinner annually, as there has been so many words of encouragement from this year and last year’s guests, it is important that we keep the patriotic spirit and memory of Gallipoli alive in Rochdale for all those who gave their lives.”

A special service to remember Rochdale’s men who fell at Gallipoli was held at the Gallipoli memorial stone in Rochdale Memorial Gardens on Thursday 25 April, the first event which will become an annual service.
