Volunteer for summer Wonder Wall planting

Date published: 29 May 2019

Green-fingered volunteers are needed for the summer planting session of the Rochdale AFC Wonder Wall feature on Saturday 15 June.

All you need to bring is suitable clothing and footwear, any gardening tools you can spare for the day.

The Wonder Wall is part of Rochdale in Bloom’s entry into the annual North West in Bloom competition. Now in its third year of planting, the wall is once again sponsored by Crown Oil and Gordon Riggs.

Roy Down, Rochdale in Bloom chairman, said: “We’re going for the hat trick this year. The Wonderwall has received the level 5 outstanding award from the RHS for the last two years and we’re really hoping we can make it a third.

“Huge thanks have to go to Rochdale Football Club who are longstanding supporters of Rochdale in Bloom.”

Back in October 2018, the Wonder Wall feature helped Rochdale to the National Gold Award at the Britain In Bloom UK Finals, after picking up two awards of its own in 2017 during its first year.

Now a green oasis, the wall was a tired-looking structure on Sandy Lane until the Rochdale In Bloom group took it under their wing and began to plant floral features on top of the wall.

In July 2018, the Wonder Wall was dedicated to the memory of Paul Hazlehurst, a Director of the Club for 15 years and a huge supporter of the project.

Anyone wanting to help be part of the planting should turn up at 9am on Saturday 15 June at the Crown Oil Arena.
