A Bradford grandfather has praised a Rochdale company for going above and beyond.

David Lawrence has sung the praises of RRG Škoda Rochdale for providing his grandson, Emmett, three, with a free bicycle after a delay in his new car being delivered.

At Emmett’s request, David had chosen a new car in his grandson’s favourite colour, blue, back in February with a wait time of approximately eight-12 weeks.

He said: “Emmett and I had decided to do for a car in our favourite colour, blue, with additional extras like a heated windscreen, after my old one broke down. The kindest thing to do to it was to flatten it.

“After some time, I was contacted and told there would be a longer wait due to a change in manufacturing techniques, and I wasn’t sure I would get it in time to drive down to Glastonbury. I’d been hiring cars since my old one broke down.”

However, David was then contacted to say that his bespoke car would be missing a major part – the all-important heated windscreen – and was offered the choice to cancel his order.

“I sent a letter the next day, outlining my concerns and disappointment. Someone will have been feeling bad over this and I said, rather than offering some kind of compensation, for the company to take that person out for lunch and show the situation some love,” the kind-hearted grandfather continued.

David was then contacted after work by Wes Sewell, the General Sales Manager at RRG Škoda Rochdale, to say what a positive attude to life he had, and that there would be something special in the boot of the car for Emmett.

The car was also delivered in time for the Glastonbury music festival at the start of July.

David beamed: “Emmett is thrilled with the bicycle, and it’s fantastic because his parents were going to buy him a bike. He loves it.

“Škoda have been superb throughout this whole experience; they really have been great.”

Mr Sewell said: “Mr Lawrence had waited a long time for his bespoke build of vehicle. He chose the vehicle because it was his grandson’s favourite colour and was excited to show him. He spoke about nothing else on the run up to the delivery of his vehicle, even being very specific about what day and time he would like the car delivered so his grandson would be there so they could take delivery together.

“After speaking with Mr Lawrence at length, it was clear that his love for his grandchildren was something very important to him.

“I asked Mr Lawrence to please not open the boot until he was with his grandson which he agreed to. I called to check if the vehicle had been delivered to him, which he confirmed, but his grandson hadn’t arrived with him as yet.

“He then called me over the moon regards the bike. Both myself and the aftersales manager Craig Haughton were thrilled that we could make what is already a great experience a better one, and one that can make the whole family happy.

“Mr Lawrence is a fantastic guy and we just wanted to do something a little special.”
