St Cuthbert students take part in D of E Award and RAF Army Residential

Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award

Year 10 students completed their final challenge of their Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award last weekend, Friday 12 - Saturday 13 July.

With perfect weather conditions forecast for the Rivington area, the group set about their expedition route on Friday, before setting up camp in the evening and walking again to their end destination.

With heavy rucksacks and tired legs, each of them did amazingly well, completing their expedition in good enough time to go home and rest on Saturday evening.

Mr Lockett said: “A massive thank you to all staff who supported the pupils through their award and expedition. Well done to all involved. “

RAF Army Residential – Manchester United Foundation

Fifteen students from Year 10 were selected and took part in a residential which ran as part of the Army Personal Development Course 2019 in partnership with Manchester United Foundation.

The residential was designed to support army partnerships in the community and, in particular, school students.

The course provided students with the opportunity to learn and develop a number of well-recognised and respected leadership skills utilised in training such as teamwork and determination, improving self-confidence and communication skills.

Mr Hilton and Miss Mundy said: “The students thoroughly enjoyed their time over the two days in which they undertook various outdoor adventure activities including; the obstacle course, firing range, paintball run and safari walks. We would like to say a huge well done to all students who took part.”

Manchester United Foundation Sport Leader Award Ceremony

Students attended an Award Ceremony at Old Trafford in which they were presented with their certificates for completing the Young Sport Leader Course with the Manchester United Foundation.

Students were able to meet and greet Paralympians who gave an inspirational speech about their personal journey and triumphs within sport.

Mr Hilton said: “Congratulations to Royal Uchenna Levi, Teegan Smithies, Sarah-Jane Nwabunike, Ralph De Assuncao and Luther Ngwenya for all their amazing effort.

“Special mention to Sarah-Jane Nwabunike who was awarded with the ‘Team Spirit Award’ for outstanding leadership whilst on the course.”

GIFT team visit Wardley Hall for tea with Bishop John Arnold

On Friday 12 July members of St. Cuthbert’s Growing In Faith Together (GIFT) team along with Miss Lally and Mrs Beisty visited Wardley Hall with St. Christopher’s RC Primary School. They had received the invitation to tea with Bishop John Arnold as a prize from the ‘Hope for the Future’ event at Bamber Bridge. Wardley Hall is the residence of the Bishop of Salford.

Bishop Henshaw was the first Bishop to reside in Wardley Hall which is a coincidence for the St. Cuthbert’s community as it was Bishop Henshaw Upper School site that St Cuthbert’s school was built upon and one of the three schools which amalgamated to form St Cuthbert’s RC High.

Bishop John welcomed the visitors to his home with a prayer, a chat and photographs he then invited us to do the tour of the Hall and its grounds, after the tour he joined everyone in the Great Hall where a beautiful buffet lunch was enjoyed by all.

After lunch everyone went with Steve Burrows to view the Laudato Si project and he informed every one of the plans to develop the site into a self-sufficient eco-friendly site, where groups can go and camp. We saw the bee-hives, the raised beds made from empty plastic milk containers and single use plastics. Students were encouraged by Steve to think of ways in which our schools can become environmentally friendly.

It was a lovely day full of learning about the lengths people of the past went to ensuring the continuation of the practising of our faith.

Joe Thompson attends end of year Liturgies

We were delighted to welcome Joe back to school this week, he is a former student and a real inspiration to students here at St Cuthbert’s.

His intention is to come and see us on more occasions in the future.
