Macmillan coffee morning at Whitworth High School raises £455

Whitworth Community High School’s charity group holding their Macmillan Coffee Morning

Delicious cakes and bakes sold at Whitworth Community High School added up to an amazing £455 for Macmillan Cancer Support.

Thanks to two generous local businesses – Anglo Brands and Northern Joinery – the school’s charity group had an order for 110 cup cakes at £1 each before they started selling to staff and students.

Year 9 students Jade Williams and Madeleine Kelsey-Lyons, both 13, have been members of the school charity committee since Year 7.

Jade said: “We set up in the hall and had a huge table full of cakes and also a name the teddy competition.

“There were so many cakes that Luke Ratcliffe and I had a further sale on the Friday.”

Lots of students baked cakes and the group owed a debt of thanks to Christine Oxford, who recently retired from Whitworth, and teaching assistant Mandy Pickering who baked what seemed like hundreds of cakes.

Jade said: “I got involved with the charity committee because my grandad runs a charity in Uganda called Drum Beat and my family sponsor children in Uganda. I have visited twice and I hope I am following in my grandfather’s footsteps.”

Madeleine had a very personal reason for getting involved with the charity group in Year 7 as her great-grandfather died from cancer.

Year 7 student Luke, 11, said: “I joined because I like helping people and I also like cleaning things, so I am going to suggest to the committee that we do a sponsored car wash for staff.”

The group is now collecting orders for bespoke bracelets to raise money for a Whitworth Guide group that wants to buy new camping equipment.
