Borough comes together as Remembrance events mark poignant day

Date published: 29 October 2019

Residents across the borough will have the chance to pay their respects to those who have made sacrifices in defence of the country at this year’s Remembrance Day Services.

Commemorations will be held on Sunday 10 November with a number of parades taking place in neighbourhoods across the community.

Representatives from the Navy, Army and Royal Air Force will join veterans and civic dignitaries for the parades, which will take place in Rochdale, Heywood, Littleborough, Middleton, Milnrow, Norden and Wardle, and a service in Castleton.

Members of the public are invited to attend to show their gratitude to servicemen and women.

The Mayor of Rochdale, Councillor Billy Sheerin, said: “Remembrance Day is about paying homage to those fallen in all wars and to thank them for the peace we have today.

"We take this time to remember all those affected by wars, the millions who have lost their lives and war veterans and their families. We remind ourselves that these sacrifices continue to take place today by our British Armed Forces and remember those who have fallen and continue to fall in conflicts.

"As Mayor, I am proud to be laying wreaths across the borough on behalf of all our communities. It will be a poignant and emotional day. We will remember them.”

Councillor Janet Emsley, cabinet member for the armed forces, said: “Remembrance Sunday is an important day for our community across the borough, as we pay tribute to the fallen and remember the sacrifices of millions of brave men and women. It is heartwarming to see people wearing their poppy with pride and to know that thousands of people, as always, will attend the local services across the borough.

"As cabinet member I am proud of the council’s work to support our Armed Forces community and Remembrance Sunday is about people of all ages coming together to pause, remember and reflect. Lest we forget.”

From now until Sunday 10 November, the Royal British Legion is holding its annual poppy appeal, which raises money to support British servicemen and women and their families. Poppies can be bought at Rochdale Town Hall, Number One Riverside, online and from shops, supermarkets, pubs and many other locations across the borough.

Every Thursday from 9am – 10am the council hosts a Veterans’ Breakfast Club in the Clock Tower Dining Room at Rochdale Town hall, alongside the council’s armed forces partners. All ex-military and dependents are welcome.
