Appeal following death of a man at M62 exit for Birch Services

Date published: 10 November 2019

A man has died following a collision on an exit-slip road of the M62 motorway.

Shortly before 5.30pm on Tuesday 29 October 2019, police were called to the M62 westbound to reports of a collision.

Enquiries by GMP’s Serious Investigation Unit have since established that a Chevrolet Matiz car was travelling westbound along the M62 exit at Birch Services when it collided with a sign.

The driver of the car – a 81-year-old man – was taken to hospital but despite best efforts from medical staff sadly died two days later.

PC Philip Shaw, of GMP’s Serious Investigation Collision Unit, said: “First and foremost I would like to extend my deepest condolences to the man’s loved ones at what must be an incredibly sad and difficult time.

“I want to assure them that we are working hard to establish exactly what happened and provide answers.

“I appreciate that it has been a few days since the incident but I am making a direct appeal to the public in the hope that someone may have vital answers. Did you see the Chevrolet Matiz car prior to the collision? If so, or you have any information that you think could assist us, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.”

Anyone with information should call police on 0161 856 4741, quoting incident number 2050 of 05/11/19. Reports can also be made anonymously to the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
