Yorkshire Building Society donates £1,000 to Springhill Hospice

Springhill Hospice has received a £1,000 donation from the Yorkshire Building Society Charitable Foundation.

Yorkshire Building Society local agency in Norden, on Edenfield Road, nominated the hospice for the donation after a conversation with customers Mr and Mrs Todkill, who support the charity.

The donation is to purchase crash mats, sensor alarm kits, tower fans, packs of slide sheets, and pulse oximeters.

Springhill Hospice is a 16-bedded purpose-built facility offering specialist palliative care to patients and their families from diagnosis to end-of-life. It costs £3.2million a year – or £8,928 every day – to keep the hospice open.

Sheila Johnson, Director of Clinical Services, Springhill Hospice, said: “We are delighted to have been nominated by the Norden branch of the Yorkshire Building Society to receive a donation of £1,000 from the Yorkshire Building Society Charitable Foundation.

“With these additional funds we will be able to purchase much-needed equipment to ensure the safety and comfort of our patients, both on the inpatient unit and in our day hospice. Here at Springhill we are committed to the provision of high-quality services and ensuring the safety of those in our care.

“As a community hospice, supporting the patients and families of Heywood, Middleton and Rochdale, we are grateful for the ongoing support of local businesses which enables us to continue in our work.”

Christine Derbyshire, customer consultant at the Norden agency of Yorkshire Building Society, said: “We’re committed to supporting local good causes where our members live and work, and are so pleased we could secure a £1,000 donation for Springhill Hospice from our charitable foundation.

“These items that we’ve been able to purchase are required by the hospice to carry on their services to the resident patients and day patients.”

Yorkshire Building Society Charitable Foundation is funded through the Small Change Big Difference scheme where members donate the pennies from the interest on their accounts just once a year to help smaller charities around the UK.

In 2018, the charitable foundation donated £439,304 to 317 registered charities nominated by members and colleagues from around the UK.
