Rochdale: temporary local road closures and restrictions

Area: Rochdale
Reason: to resurface the carriageway.

Expected start and finish: 8am, Monday 9 March - 6pm, Sunday 15 March 2020 as required.
Restriction and location: temporary closure of Well I' Th' Lane from its junction with Clifton Street to its junction with William Henry Street.
Alternative route: the alternative route for vehicles:

  • Travelling south is Tweedale Street, Milkstone Road, Station Road, Maclure Road, Drake Street, Milnrow Road, Oldham Road, Durham Street and Miall Street.
  • Travelling north is Queensway, Oldham Road, Milnrow Road, Drake Street, Maclure Road, Richard Street and Station Street.

Reason: to install traffic light detector loops in the carriageway.

Expected start and finish: 8am, Monday 9 March - 5pm, Friday 20 March 2020.
Restriction and location: temporary closure of Malvern Street West, from its junction with Sandy Lane to a point 20 metres in an easterly direction.
Alternative route: the alternative route for vehicles is Claremont Road, Bury Road and Sandy Lane.

Area: Rochdale
Reason: to hold the Rochdale Food & Drink Festival 2020.

Expected start and finish:

  • The closure of The Esplanade to vehicles will be operative from 12noon, Friday 3 April - 10pm, Saturday 4 April 2020.
  • The prohibition of waiting on The Esplanade, the entire enclosed car parking area south of the main carriageway, will be operative from 6am, Friday 3 April - 10pm, Saturday 4 April 2020.
  • The closure of Vicars Gate to vehicles and prohibition of waiting at any time on that road will be operative from 6am - 10pm, Saturday 4 April 2020.

Restriction and location: closure to vehicles of the following:

  • The Esplanade, the entire enclosed car parking area south of the main carriageway.
  • Vicars Gate, for its entire length.

Prohibition of waiting at any time on:

  • The Esplanade, the entire enclosed car parking area south of the main carriageway.
  • Vicars Gate, for its entire length.

Restriction and location: temporary closure of Holborn Street from Manchester Road for a distance of 302 metres in a northerly direction.
Alternative route: the alternative route for vehicles will be signed on street when the closure is in place.

Reason: to resurface the carriageway.

Expected start and finish: 8am, Monday 13 April - 6pm, Monday 27 April 2020 as required.
Restriction and location: temporary closure of Half Acre Lane for its entire length.
Alternative route: the alternative route for vehicles will be signed on street when the closure is in place.

Middleton: temporary local road closures and restrictions

Area: Middleton
Reason: to construct a sewer overflow in the carriageway.

Expected start and finish: Monday 6 January - Friday 5 June 2020.
Restriction and location: temporary closure of Waverley Road, from its junction with Rochdale Road for a distance of 50 metres in a north-westerly direction.
Alternative route: the alternative route for vehicles is Rochdale Road and Nowell Road.

Area: Middleton
Reason: to work on building the new Mills Hill railway station access.

Expected start and finish: Friday 21 February - Wednesday 27 May 2020.
Restriction and location:

  • Temporary closure of the southerly footway of Oldham Road to pedestrians. This will be from a point 90 metres west of its junction with Mills Hill Road for a distance of 80 metres in a westerly direction.
  • Prohibition of waiting for vehicles on the northerly side of Oldham Road. This will be from a point 30 metres west of its junction with Mills Hill Road for a distance of 160 metres in a westerly direction.

Alternative route: pedestrian crossing facilities will be provided to divert pedestrians onto the northerly footway.

Area: Middleton
Reason: to install high voltage electricity cables.

Expected start and finish: 8am, Monday 9 March - 6pm, Sunday 29 March 2020.
Restriction and location: cyclists will be diverted from the cycle lane on the north west side of Heywood Old Road in order to pass the works. This will be at a point 320 metres south-west of its junction with Whittle Lane for the remainder of its length in a north-easterly direction.

Reason: to work on building the new Mills Hill railway station access.

Expected start and finish: 6am, Saturday 14 March - 6am, Monday 16 March 2020.
Restriction and location: temporary closure of Oldham Road, from its junction with Baytree Lane to its junction with Mills Hill Road.
Alternative route: the alternative route for vehicles will be Oldham Road, Manchester New Road, Victoria Avenue East, Hollinwood Avenue and Middleton Road.

Area: Middleton
Reason: to resurface the carriageway.

Expected start and finish: 7.30am, Monday 23 March - 6pm, Sunday 29 March 2020.
Restriction and location: temporary closure of Cheapside, from its junction with Rochdale Road to its junction with Morton Street.
Alternative route: the alternative route for vehicles will be Rochdale Road, Long Street, Market Place, Lodge Street, Boarshaw Road and Barrowfields.

Heywood: temporary local road closures and restrictions

Area: Heywood
Reason: to repair the pedestrian bridge and allow the safe passage of pedestrians only.

Expected start and finish: 12.01am, Thursday 6 June 2019 - 11.59pm, Monday 16 March 2020.
Restriction and location: temporary closure of Schofield Street from its junction with Cowburn Street for a distance of 32 metres in a south-easterly direction.
Alternative route: the alternative route for vehicles is Walton Street, Manchester Road, Manchester Street, Hardfield Street and Schofield Street.

Area: Heywood
Reason: to facilitate works to a new housing development.

Expected start and finish: Monday 4 November 2019 - Friday 1 May 2020.
Restriction and location: temporary closure of Claybank Street, from a point 32 metres east of its junction with Cedar Avenue for a distance of 105 metres.
Alternative route: the alternative route for vehicles is Cedar Avenue and Furness Avenue.

Area: Heywood
Reason: to repair the pedestrian bridge.

Expected start and finish:

  • The temporary closure of Schofield Street, from its junction with Cowburn Street for a distance of 32 metres in a south-easterly direction, will be in place from 11.59pm, Monday 16 March - 11.59pm, Wednesday 16 September 2020.
  • The other closures listed below will be in place from 7am-5pm each day from Monday 2 March - Thursday 5 March 2020.

Restriction and location:

  • Temporary closure of Schofield Street, from its junction with Cowburn Street for a distance of 32 metres in a south-easterly direction.
  • Temporary closure of King Street, from its junction with Schofield Street for a distance of 55 metres in a westerly direction.
  • Temporary closure of Cowburn Street, from its junction with Schofield Street for a distance of 10 metres in a north-easterly direction.
  • Temporary closure of Schofield Street, from a point 32 metres south east of its junction with Cowburn Street, for a distance of 66 metres in a north-westerly direction.

Alternative route: the alternative routes will be signed on street when the closures are in place.

Pennines: temporary local road closures and restrictions

Area: Pennines
Reason: Virgin Media are currently installing new Fibre Broadband in the Pennines area.

Expected start and finish: ongoing
Who to contact: for any issues about this work, please use the following methods to gain the quickest and safest possible resolution.

  • Contractors on site - contact a site supervisor. They are best placed to resolve many issues there and then. In most instances, this will be the quickest and safest way to resolve any issue.
  • Virgin Media Helpdesk - if unresolved, or there are no contractors in the area, or if the site has been left in an unsafe manner and requires urgent attention, please ring the Virgin Media helpdesk on 0333 000 5925. The helpdesk hours are Monday - Friday, 8am-7.30pm & Saturday, 8am-12noon. The helpdesk will alert the contractor and Virgin Media's compliance engineers.
  • Alternatively, please email expansionworks@virginmedia.co.uk with details of your address and preferred contact method.
  • Rochdale Borough Council Highways - we need to be aware of issues being raised with Virgin Media. Please email highways@rochdale.gov.uk or phone on 0300 303 8879, Monday-Friday, 9am-5pm. At all other times, please phone our Contact Centre on 0300 303 8875 for emergency work on the highway.

Area: Pennines
Reason: to protect the public while works are done on a new housing development.

Expected start and finish: 8am-5pm each day from Monday 2 December 2019 - Saturday 2 May 2020.
Restriction and location: temporary closure of unnamed footpath from Bramhall Close to Elizabethan Way and from Elizabethan Way for a distance of 46 metres in a north westerly direction. As this is a footpath closure, it will only affect pedestrians and cyclists.
Alternative route: the alternative route for pedestrians and cyclists will be clearly signed when the closure is in place.

Area: Pennines
Reason: to maintain the level crossing.

Expected start and finish: 11pm, Saturday 14 March - 6am, Sunday 15 March 2020.
Restriction and location: temporary closure of Smithy Bridge Road, from a point 50 metres north west of the level crossing to a point 50 metres south east of the level crossing.
Alternative route: the alternative route for vehicles will be Smithy Bridge Road, Milnrow Road (Rochdale), Albert Royds Street, Halifax Road (A58) and Smithy Bridge Road.

Area: Pennines
Reason: to clean, maintain and renew the level crossing running rails.

Expected start and finish: 10pm-6am, Monday 16 March - Wednesday 18 March 2020.
Restriction and location: temporary closure of Smithy Bridge Road, from a point 50 metres north west of the level crossing to a point 50 metres south east of the level crossing.
Alternative route: the alternative route for vehicles will be Smithy Bridge Road, Milnrow Road (Rochdale), Albert Royds Street, Halifax Road (A58) and Smithy Bridge Road.

Area: Pennines
Reason: to replace gas mains in the carriageway.

Expected start and finish: 6am, Monday 6 April - 6pm, Friday 5 June 2020.
Restriction and location: temporary closure of Hare Hill Road, from its junction with Church Street to its junction with Greenwood Street.
Alternative route: the alternative route for vehicles will be Church Street, Featherstall Road, Whitelees Road and Hare Hill Road.
