Rochdale driver stopped by police while making journey to Essex to buy new car

Date published: 29 April 2020

A Rochdale driver was stopped by motorway police on the M11 – driving to Essex to buy a new car.

The car was pulled over by the Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire Roads Policing Unit during the early hours of Wednesday (29 April).

Three occupants in the car told police they were going to buy a new car – over 200 miles away - despite government advice to only travel for essential reasons.

The driver was arrested after failing a drugs wipe.

Essential motor travel during the Covid-19 pandemic covers key workers travelling to and from work, buying essentials such as food or medicine, or delivering essentials to someone who is vulnerable or elderly.
