Derwent Avenue residents show NHS solidarity after 10 weeks of 'Clap for Carers'

Date published: 03 June 2020

For the last 10 weeks, residents of Derwent Avenue in Heywood have been coming together every Thursday evening at 8pm to applaud our NHS and keyworkers.

The ‘Clap for our Carers’ began on 26 March, with residents in the Rochdale borough and up and down the country taking to their windows and doorsteps to applaud and say thank you for the NHS workers’ efforts in fighting the Covid-19 coronavirus pandemic.

On Thursday 28 May, the night of the final Clap for Carers, the residents also joined in with the Greater Manchester-wide singalong, ‘Together in One Voice’.

‘Together in One Voice’ was also supported by a number of famous Greater Manchester faces, with many appearing on screen to deliver messages of support before the region-wide event.

Local audio-visual company Mash Audio Visual played music on the street, using a full PA system, with the residents celebrating whilst socially distancing.

Similar events had also been in held in countries such as Italy, France and Spain. The Italians and Spanish had also been singing from their balconies in order to lift spirits during the current crisis.
