Police warn of fake online adverts for cars and caravans

Date published: 15 June 2020

Buying and selling vehicles on the internet can make the process simple and easier; however police are reminding people to be vigilant when buying a car or caravan online and to take their time when looking at adverts.

Fraudsters are posting fake listings for cars and caravans online, using the covid-19 restrictions to trick people into handing over cash for vehicles they have not seen.

When buying online, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Whether it’s a car with only 15,000 miles on the clock, a cheap insurance policy, or a tax refund, you should always take steps to ensure that what is being offered is genuine.

Follow these tips to avoid falling victim:

  • Don’t be pressurised into making any advance payments without seeing the vehicle in person first.
  • Use the DVLA’s free online vehicle enquiry service to check the registration number, make and model of the vehicle.
  • Check the vehicle as well as its documentation, including the log book.
  • Make sure the VIN is the same as in the log book.
  • Check the price is in-line with the market.
  • Pay using a method that can be tracked, for instance by credit card, and avoid cash.
  • Be cautious of unexpected contact from anyone claiming to be from the DVLA or an insurer.
