Remembrance Sunday 2020: Littleborough

Date published: 08 November 2020

Observed by Commonwealth countries, Remembrance Day, also known as Armistice Day, marks the day when World War One ended: at 11am on the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918. Remembrance Sunday takes place on the Sunday closest to this date, this year on Sunday (8 November).

Here's how Littleborough remembered the fallen this year.

Hundreds of painted poppy stones have been laid at Littleborough Cenotaph.

The pebble kits were distributed from Star Tree Studio, before being returned with their Remembrance designs.

Caroline Pheasey, whose original idea it was, said: "I enjoy painting pebbles and saw the idea on Facebook to leave a poppy pebble on a war grave or memorial. The thought developed into something we could do as a community.

"Thanks to Councillor Janet Emsley, Neela Jackson at Star Tree Studio, council officers, the Veterans Breakfast Club, Pennines Township and Wickes at Oldham who helped sourced the pebbles and most of all, the primary schools, nursery schools and Littleborough community for joining in to help us all remember Remembrance Day this year."

Councillor Janet Emsley, Rochdale Council Pennines Township, The Veterans Breakfast Club Rochdale & Wickes Oldham funded the project.

Wardle and West Littleborough councillors Ashley Dearnley, John Taylor and Rina Paolucci have laid a wreath at Littleborough Cenotaph as did Littleborough Lakeside councillors Janet Emsley, John Hartley and Tom Besford.

Rochdale Borough Council and Balfour Beatty have painted a Remembrance Poppy near the cenotaph.

Children from First Steps Nursery and Tinkerbell have paid their respects with their handmade wreaths, created from their handprints.
