Cold survival kits distributed to homeless

Date published: 15 February 2021

Thirty ‘cold survival kits’ were donated to The Sanctuary Trust at Halsall House Hostel on Tweedale Street on Saturday (13 February).

Temperatures over the previous few days have been well below freezing, at times dropping to -6. These kits provide essential items for those currently homeless, such as a thermal foil blanket, hat, gloves, bag and thermal clothing.

The kits were delivered by UKIM Madina Mosque’s iCare team and Imam Mirazam from UKIM Neeli Mosque.

They were gratefully received by the centre manager, who advised they would come in very useful for those in need.

Faad Khan, head of iCare Rochdale, said: “It is incredibly inspiring to see the UKIM Rochdale mosques come together in partnership and get involved to help those that are less fortunate in their locality.”

This is the fifth year iCare Rochdale have raised and provided the homeless with winter kits.

Around 500 kits were distributed across the country this weekend by the group’s other chapters.

As part of another iCare project, Madina Mosque runs a food hub on the last Sunday of each month, providing food to the homeless, destitute and those struggling in the community.

The teams at Madina Mosque and Neeli Mosque have been very busy in the last year, having distributed over 500 food parcels to those in need during the first lockdown.
