New play area set to make a splash at Springfield Park

Work to install a new pirate-themed play area is due to start on Monday 12 April at Springfield Park in Rochdale.

The majority of the existing equipment in the toddler play area is being replaced with a new and improved pirate-inspired multi-play unit and inclusive roundabout.

Springfield Park sits between Heywood and Rochdale and is the largest park in the borough at 42 acres. The park was originally completed in 1927 on the former site of a 13th-century abbey and boasts an attractive large lake; sports facilities, an 18-hole golf course and a miniature steam railway.

KOMPAN UK has been selected as Rochdale Borough Council’s preferred partner on this project and will be all hands on deck to install the new equipment suitable for ages 1+.

Councillor Neil Emmott, cabinet member for quality of place at Rochdale Council, said: “We’re delighted that plans are afoot to bring this exciting new play area to Springfield Park and its timely re-opening will provide a new place to venture for our many families to enjoy.

“Springfield Park has something for everyone, boasting green-flag status and numerous facilities for sports and recreation. This new addition can only add to the appeal of the park, which takes pride of place amongst our other beautiful outdoor spaces across the borough.”

Plans include two sets of swings for toddlers and older children; an inclusive roundabout, a four child seesaw and a seagull springer. The multi-play unit will be the focal point with DDA accessible stairs, curly slide and space for wheelchair users – this ship will be ready for any adventure. The bright wet pour rubber surface, chosen for its safety and durability will feature nautical themed graphics and treasure trail.

The addition to the park will complement the existing equipment already in place; such as the outdoor gym equipment and climbing net.

The toddler play area is expected to be closed for five weeks with the older children’s play area adjacent remaining open.
