Snow warning with arrival of Storm Arwen

Date published: 26 November 2021

A weather warning for snow has been issued across the Pennines for tonight (Friday 26 November) as Storm Arwen arrives.

The Met Office says rain and hill snow will move over northern England with sleet and snow showers to follow.

Snow is is expected mainly above 300 to 400 m, particularly over the Pennines where 10-15 cm of snow may fall in some places. Rain is expected over lower levels, but with the strong winds expected, the Met Office is warning that “very difficult travel conditions are likely with blizzards leading to reduced visibility and the potential for some drifting of snow.”

Various yellow, amber and red alerts for wind and snow are in place across the majority of the UK due to Storm Arwen.

The Rochdale borough is also covered by a yellow weather warning for wind on Saturday. The yellow weather alert for snow is in place from 5pm Friday to 10am Saturday.

What to expect

  • There is a small chance of travel delays on roads with some stranded vehicles and passengers, along with delayed or cancelled rail and air travel
  • There is a slight chance that some rural communities could become cut off
  • There is a small chance that power cuts will occur and other services, such as mobile phone coverage, may be affected
