Milnrow Memorial Park junior parkrun celebrates 100th run

Date published: 08 February 2022

Milnrow Memorial Park junior parkrun celebrated its 100th run on Sunday 6 February.

18 children helped by 20 volunteers and lots of parents/carers braved the cold and rain to take part in the local event, which was founded in October 2018.

The pandemic caused the event to close whilst Covid restrictions were enforced but it started up again in May 2021.

Event director Cathy Jepson-Brown said: "It’s so lovely to celebrate our 100th event. It’s felt like a long time coming but we finally made it!

"The children have had lots of fun running around our 2k course - lots of them in dress-up.  It’s nice to help our local children get fit and healthy in a fun and safe environment."

As part of the celebrations, certificates were handed out to both the children and the volunteers to say 'thank you' to those who have shown excellent commitment.

A cake, complete with a map of the course, was made by regular volunteer Emma Phillips and was happily devoured by all.

North West parkrun ambassador Barbara Bayliss, who helped to set up the junior parkrun, said: "It’s been a great morning, despite the weather. There must have been around 50 people participating in some way; that’s a fantastic achievement."

The junior parkrun takes place in Milnrow Memorial Park every Sunday at 9am. It is for children aged 4-14 and is free to take part with plenty of volunteer opportunities for the adults.

The children make their way around the 2k course by either running, jogging or walking.  They can run with an adult or, as the course is fully marshalled, they can run by themselves if they prefer.
