Platinum Jubilee street parties and events in Rochdale borough

Celebrations are set to erupt across the country to mark the Queen’s platinum jubilee and Rochdale has plenty of events lined up across the borough this weekend to mark the milestone anniversary.

The festivities, in honour of Queen Elizabeth II’s 70 years on the throne, will take place from Thursday 2 June through to Sunday 5 June.

Details have been released of where some street parties confirmed so far will take place – although council chiefs stress it is not the final list due to other street parties taking place.

There will be 18 roads closed for parties – eight in Middleton, six in Rochdale and two each in both Littleborough and Heywood.

 

Thursday 2 June

The World Famous Black Dyke Band

6.30pm at Champness Hall, Drake Street, Rochdale

In celebration of HM Queen Elizabeth’s Platinum Jubilee the world famous Black Dyke Band and Wardle Junior Blast will provide a ‘scintillating evening’ with thrilling film scores, toe tapping big band music, and patriotic favourites.

The concert will round off with favourites from the Last Night of the Proms. Guiding Black Dyke Band through all the songs will be professional opera singer Tom Smith. Tom will also sing two songs with Black Dyke Band including Nessun Dorma.

Light a Beacon for The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee

9.15pm at Middleton Jubilee Park, New Lane, Middleton

As part of The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, authorities across the country are hosting a Commemorative Event to light a Beacon. The lighting of the Beacons on 2 June will be the first international, community event of Jubilee weekend, providing the unique opportunity of leading the special weekend of celebrations.

Rochdale Mayor Councillor Ali Ahmed along with the Queen’s Representatives (Deputy Lieutenants) will welcome all to Middleton Jubilee Park, for this free public event.

Family Fun Day

In conjunction with Her Majesty The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations, Rochdale Science Initiative in partnership with BACP (Bangladesh Association & Community Project) have planned a family fun day.

The day promises to be jam packed with fun-filled science based challenges, live experiments, demonstrations, hands-on activities, and getting up close to live exotic animals.

Light a Beacon for The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee

Whitworth Town Council will light a beacon on Brown Wardle hill to mark the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee this summer.

Street Eat Festival

11am – 7pm at The Butts, Rochdale town centre

The popular Street Eat festival is returning to Rochdale to mark the Queen’s 70 year’s on the throne.

Food lovers looking to eat, drink and enjoy free entertainment should head to The Butts on Friday 3 June.

Organised by Rochdale Business Improvement District (BID), Street Eat was held annually until the coronavirus pandemic, bringing together the town’s food and drink establishments.

Tasty food from local restaurant chefs will be served with dozens of mouth-watering dishes all at £4.50 or less. Traders include Bombay Brew, Vicolo Del Vino, The Medicine Tap, The Flying Horse, The Baum, Uno Burrito, The Treehouse Bar, Bean, Bank Top Farm and Keep It Sweet.

There will be bars for the adults and musical entertainment including performances by local acts including Jackson Kay, acoustic guitarist Noel Fraser, popular duo Shenanigans and Turners Dance School.

Meanwhile, activities for children include Punch and Judy shows and a helter-skelter.

Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Celebration

Street parties and road closures

Despite the deadline for street party road closures having passed, forms continue to flood in from Rochdalians preparing to mark the milestone anniversary.

Applications are required so that authorities including bus companies and emergency services know which streets are likely to be blocked or hard to navigate, and that residents avoid potential safety issues, too.

Council bosses say that, with the April 17 deadline now long passed, there can be no guarantee any further applications for road closures will be processed at this late stage.

 

 

However, residents can keep the road open and organise a gathering or ‘Street Meet’ on private land, such as a driveway or front garden, without any requirement to fill in council forms.

All parties must be for the purpose of celebrating the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee and held during daylight hours on this date. This is in line with national celebrations, referred to as the ‘Big Jubilee Lunch’.
