Number of GMP police officers tops 8,000 for first time in a decade

Date published: 12 May 2023

For the first time in a decade, Greater Manchester Police has more than 8,000 officers.

In 2010, GMP had 8,219 officers before losing nearly 2,000 officers due to cuts made by the Conservative and coalition governments, in an attempt to reduce the national deficit. GMP lost net funding of almost £154 million.

However, the last Conservative manifesto pledged 20,000 more police officers, returning numbers closer to that of 2010.

Since September 2019, 1,280 police officers have been recruited by GMP, bringing the total number to 8,067.

Assistant Chief Constable Colin McFarlane said: “As the force celebrates having over 8,000 police officers for the first time in a decade, I would like to welcome all those who have joined GMP throughout the Police Uplift Programme.

“This substantial increase in officer numbers is something the people of Greater Manchester have wanted for some time – there are now more police to fight, prevent and reduce crime; keep people safe; and care for victims.

“All of our new recruits have their own reasons for wanting to serve communities. They come from diverse backgrounds and have knowledge and skills which will make them an asset to the force, I am looking forward to seeing what impact they will have on communities across Greater Manchester."

The Conservative government says its ‘Beating Crime Plan’ will deliver a safer Britain alongside record funding for our police, with a £17.2 billion policing budget for 2023–2024. The government adds that since 2010, crime – excluding fraud – has been cut by over 50 per cent. Theft has been reduced by 20 per cent and domestic burglary by 30 per cent.

Chris Clarkson MP for Heywood and Middleton has welcomed the additional police officers.

He said: “From working with our local police force, I know just how valuable 1,280 more police officers will be in helping crack down on crime in our local community.

“These recruits mean there are now 8,067 police officers in Greater Manchester and more police officers than ever before across the country, helping to pursue criminals and tackle anti-social behaviour, keeping neighbourhoods safe for the law-abiding majority.

“It is clear it is only the Conservatives who can keep our streets safe, give people peace of mind, and deliver on the priorities of the British people.”

Commenting, Home Secretary Suella Braverman said: “Everyone deserves to feel safe in their communities, on their streets and in their homes.

“Now we've delivered on our 2019 manifesto promise, with more than 20,000 new police officers.

“With a record 150,000 police officers across England and Wales, people can trust in the Conservatives to keep our streets safe and deliver for local areas.”
