Springhill Hospice links up with Local Hospice Lottery to raise £1.7m over the next five years

Date published: 28 November 2023

Springhill Hospice has partnered with Local Hospice Lottery to raise an expected £1.7m for palliative care over the next five years.

For each £1 entry in the weekly draw, Local Hospice Lottery will give Springhill Hospice between 60% and 80% of profits from individuals playing in support of the hospice, significantly more than most other society lotteries.

Springhill Hospice is one of 34 hospices throughout Great Britain benefitting from the proceeds raised by the hospice-owned society lottery’s weekly draws.

This regular and reliable income will make a big difference to the amount of exceptional care Springhill Hospice can provide, for adults with life-limiting illnesses and their loved ones across Heywood, Middleton and Rochdale.

The income raised through this new partnership will play a vital part in enabling Springhill Hospice to keep caring for patients and loved ones like Jean and Denis.

When Jean was diagnosed with terminal cancer, it was Springhill’s Community Team that reached out to arrange care and take the strain off her and husband Denis.

It wasn’t just the physical aspects of caring that Springhill managed: “The team helped our wellbeing, asking how we both were and if there was anything that we needed,” said Denis.

Jean was always so positive, and her children provided an incentive to keep fighting. She said: “Dr Lippett helped with sorting my medications, she always takes the time to listen and I never felt like I was an inconvenience. She’s absolutely great.

“I can’t tell you how much things improved. I could get up and down the stairs again and could sleep in my own bed. Psychologically that did wonders.

“I so appreciate all the work that Springhill has done for me.”

By sharing management costs and overheads, Local Hospice Lottery’s innovative and collaborative model ensures that as much money as possible can be passed to hospice care, whilst also giving hospice supporters the opportunity to win a larger prize fund too.

Anyone in the UK aged 18 or over can join the Local Hospice Lottery, and play in support of furthering the vital care of Springhill Hospice, whilst also having a great chance to win. Membership costs just £5 per month and there are currently 201 cash prizes to be won every week.

Ant Lord, head of income generation and marketing for Springhill Hospice, said: “We are really excited to be partnering with Local Hospice Lottery.

“By doing this, we are able to generate much more income for Springhill than we would be able to on our own, and can also offer better prizes, so it’s a win-win for everyone.”

There are also three Super Draws that take place in March, September and December each year, giving players the chance to win an additional guaranteed top prize of £10,000.

To help recruit new players and raise more money for Springhill Hospice, a team of paid fundraisers will be working in the local area in the coming months - both door-to-door and at community venues - offering local people the opportunity to sign up to the Lottery.

Each member of the team will be wearing a uniform and have a Local Hospice Lottery photo identity card.

If you would like to view photos of the fundraisers, are interested in becoming a paid fundraiser yourself, or want to join the lottery, please visit the Local Hospice Lottery website: www.localhospicelottery.org
