Rochdale homelessness charity launches winter appeal

Date published: 06 December 2023

Rochdale-based homelessness charity, Petrus Community is calling on the local community to help support those who are homeless or vulnerable this winter.

Petrus Community launched its Winter Warmer appeal for 2023, seeking support from the members of the local community to keep their much-needed Hub stocked with warm clothing and hot food throughout winter.

Charity director, Sonia Denham said: “As the cold months and dark nights draw in, we have real concerns for the safety and wellbeing of the vulnerable people we support, especially those who are forced to sleep on the streets.”

Homelessness in England is rising, with latest figures showing rough sleeping increasing by 26%. Nearly a quarter of a million households across England are now experiencing homelessness, including rough sleeping, sofa surfing and living in unsuitable temporary accommodation like B&Bs.

Sonia continued: “This is not a lifestyle choice, and that’s why it’s so important that people get behind our Winter Warmer Appeal, so that we can provide warm winter clothing and essentials for people who need them most.”

The charity is asking for donations of winter clothing essentials, such as hats, scarves and gloves, as well as non-perishable foods for their hub, and gifts for its service users.

Petrus service manager, Louise Brett said: “Our hub will be open Monday – Saturday throughout winter, serving up hot breakfasts and drinks and providing access to essential health and wellbeing support and of course, this extends to Christmas Day.

“We, and I’m sure we're not alone, feel it’s important that everyone has a gift to open and a moment to feel appreciated, reminding everyone that they are valued and seen.”

From making donations to buying an item from their Amazon Wishlist, there are lots of ways to support Petrus; full details of the appeal are available here: https://bit.ly/3RoFdGj.
