A saluki dog has been left with horrific wounds after being attacked by an ‘XL Bully’ dog on Upper Passmonds Grove in Rochdale.
Trish Hardie was returning from taking her daughter Vikki’s five-year-old dog Peaches, from a walk when she was attacked during the afternoon of Tuesday 5 December.
Trish said she was stretching up to open the gate with the lead wrapped around her wrist when she was “catapulted past the gate.” She was injured when she was pulled over, with Peaches landing on top of her.
“It happened so fast,” she explained. “A man got out of an Asda delivery van and had to get the other dog in a headlock to get it off Peaches before making sure I was okay.
“The dog owner didn’t say anything other than he needed to get to his van and left. He didn’t even see if we were okay.”
She continued: “Peaches had a 20cm bite across her neck and she had to have a two-and-a-half-hour surgery.
“She’s been left with a detached retina from the attack, and she can’t see out of her right eye now.
“The eye specialist in Runcorn said they could operate, but it’s around £8,500 and there’s no guarantee her sign would return.”
The dog which attacked Peaches has been described by the family as a “ginger or brown coloured XL Bully.”
Vikki said: “Mum’s lucky she wasn’t seriously injured or killed trying to protect Peaches. People wonder why XL Bullies are getting banned and all this is because of some unresponsible owner.”
Trish added: “It could have been a child or an elderly person.”
No arrests have been made in connection with the incident.
A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police said: “Officers were called to reports that a dog had attacked another dog on Upper Passmonds Grove in Rochdale.”
