Middleton GP Dr Mo Jiva has been crowned GP of the Year in the 2023 General Practice Awards.

Dr Jiva, who is GP and CEO of Rochdale and Bury Local Medical Committee, CEO of Rochdale Health Alliance, GP Federation Clinical Director, Middleton Primary Care Network, was awarded the accolade at an awards ceremony in London 8 December.

Dr Jiva is a GP at Peterloo Medical Centre and was awarded an MBE for his services to general practice in 2014.

In 2008, he opened the UK's first GP practice at a supermarket, based at Sainsbury's Heaton Park, which was then rolled out nationwide, before securing central funding for GPs to open later and at weekends.

Of his win, Dr Jiva said: "I was surprised to be nominated and then win the national award of General Practitioner of the Year 2023. With the pandemic, hospital waiting lists and national strikes there have been unprecedented pressures in general practice across the Rochdale borough.

"Strong effective teamwork within each GP surgery and supporting agencies have helped us safely get through 2023.

"By the end of the year, we're able to bring into the borough another national trophy recognising our hard work, alongside the one that our borough's neighbourhood team won earlier this year."

The General Practice Awards have been running for 15 years and aim to highlight and reward the hard work in primary care across the UK.

A total of 21 awards were presented on the night across a range of categories including primary care network of the year, pharmacist of the year, nurse of the year and a rising star award.

The event was hosted by television actor and comedian, Miles Jupp.
