Church blessing for Rochdale couple with help from Alternative Futures Group (AFG) and support workers

Date published: 01 January 2024

A local resident supported by Rochdale Borough Council and the Alternative Futures Group, health and social care, recently had a church blessing with his lifelong partner, Serena O’Leary, in an emotional and memorable day of joy and celebration.

The blessing took place in St Chad’s Church, Rochdale, after months of planning and preparation, with help from their support team at the Alternative Futures Group (AFG).

Brendan was accompanied by friends Roger Tinsley and Lee Radcliffe at the ceremony, who are also supported by AFG, with Roger as his best man and Lee as ring bearer.

The couple were then joined by friends and family at a reception, where they had their first dance to Elvis Presley’s ‘Love Me Tender’.

Brendan’s AFG support worker, Nikki Thomson said: “The pair looked fabulous and the day was filled with laughter and enjoyment from start to finish. Brendan was the happiest man alive and it felt amazing to be able to support him to make his dream come true.”

Tilly Simmons, director of operations for AFG, said: “We wish Brendan and Serena every happiness and joy, and say a huge well done to our colleagues who support Brendan, for helping to turn his wish into a reality.”
