Sue Verity - Woman of Rochdale 2009

Date published: 22 April 2009

The Springhill Hospice Woman of Rochdale 2009 has finally been announced at a special Town Hall ceremony.

It was music to the ears of Sue Verity, a long standing, dedicated teacher and conductor of Rochdale Youth Orchestra, to hear she has won the coveted title for 2009.

Also a pianist and cellist, Sue is a founder member of Rochdale Musical Society and a member of Northern Baroque.

She has made marks on many people’s lives, including Rochdale-grown pop star Lisa Stansfield, who went on to become president of the Rochdale Youth Orchestra.

She has been a committee member and volunteer with Rochdale Youth Festival of Music, Speech and Dance since 1989.

In her acceptance speech, Sue told the audience she was “overwhelmed” to be the woman of the year.

She said: “I am absolutely delighted and honoured with this.

“Thank you so much to the chief executive, Christine Webb, for all your support”.

Sue’s success follows that of last year’s winner, Pauline Fardon, a WRVS mental health campaigner and Meals on Wheels worker who has dedicated herself to helping others for a number of years.

In passing the title on, she said: “I was so happy to win this title and it’s a shame to see the rose bowl move from my dining room table, but it could not be going to a better person”.
