Sir Cyril Smith MBE recovering in hospital after fall

Date published: 28 June 2007

Sir Cyril Smith MBE spent his 79th birthday (28 June) in hospital having been rushed in on Monday 25 June following a fall on Sunday. Sir Cyril, who is still heavily involved in local politics, was found by his brother Norman who was alerted by an alarm system.

Sir Cyril is still under observation however, he is said to be comfortable and making a slow but good recovery.

His brother Norman Smith MBE said: "This latest accident has been a wake up call for Cyril who has been doing too much of late.  Only in May he was canvassing door-to-door in the council elections as well as many other jobs.  Since then he has simply not stopped involving himself in a number of projects.  He has already received a number of visitors and greatly appreciates the doctors and the excellent staff at our Infirmary."

Paul Rowen MP said: "It is a shame that Sir Cyril had to spend his 79th birthday in hospital.  He was determined to attend an event at Rochdale Town Hall to recognise the achievement of some of his many friends here in Rochdale.  I will be going to see him tomorrow and look forward to catching up.  I am simply not used to not speaking to him for more than a few days - he gives me all sorts of advice.

"Norman and his family as usual are taking excellent care of him as are the staff at the hospital.  I believe he is now sat up planning telling everyone who will listen to continue the campaign to save services at the Infirmary.

"We all wish him a happy birthday and hope he will be back home as soon as he is able."

This is ‘Big Cyril’s’ second stay in hospital following a fall in little over a year. In February 2006 Sir Cyril was taken to hospital after a fall at his Emma Street home in Spotland. His brother Norman explained at the time that dehydration and low potassium levels had caused a weakness in the then 78-year-old.
