‘Children need nurseries not nuclear missiles’, say peace group

Many Rochdale residents have signed a petition campaigning for nuclear disarmament.

Members of Rochdale and Littleborough Peace Group encouraged shoppers on Yorkshire Street on Saturday (8 August) to sign a petition calling for a halt to the government’s plans to upgrade the Trident nuclear missile system.

Hayley Brobbin and Sarah Davin from Heywood told Pat Sanchez, from the Peace Group, that the country’s children need more nursery places not more nuclear weapons.

Ms Sanchez said: “The people we speak to are very clear that they don’t want public money wasted on nuclear weapons of mass destruction.

"They want their taxes spent on health, education and social services.

"With the UK facing its biggest economic crisis in decades, there is no case for wasting £76 billion on replacing Trident. Opinion polls show that a majority of the population wants Britain to rid itself of nuclear weapons and it is obvious that people in Rochdale borough think the same."
