Sir Cyril recovering after fall

Date published: 20 August 2009

Sir Cyril Smith, the former Rochdale MP, is recovering at Rochdale Infirmary after a recent fall.

Sir Cyril attended the Infirmary 10 days ago after being found collapsed in his Emma Street home, where he has lived for over 60 years.

Current Rochdale MP Paul Rowen said: “Sir Cyril is a fighter and despite his increasing fragility, he continues to be cheerful.

"Cyril is 81 now and has been relying on his family for support.

"He’s doing well and was very keen to praise the staff at the Infirmary for the excellent job that they do.

"Cyril remains a popular figure in our Town and now that he is sat up, he’s enjoying meeting passers by – many of them who still remember him for the work he did during his 20 years as our MP.”

Sir Cyril's brother, Norman Smith MBE, said: “The Infirmary is currently doing tests on Cyril and we are awaiting the results. He is very poorly but maintains his sense of humour!
"The staff at the three wards that he has been in have been amazing and done everything to make Cyril comfortable during this difficult time. On behalf of the family, I would like to thank people for all their messages of support – it means a lot to Cyril.”
