Michelle Boland top of the crops

Date published: 13 March 2007

Hairdressing student Michelle Boland has recently been awarded a prestigious accolade by City amp; Guilds’ Medals for Excellence (awarding body) for her excellent work whilst studying for an NVQ Level 2 in the subject at Hopwood Hall College.

Michelle, a mum of three from Newhey, completed the NVQ Level 2 course in only 16 months during 2005/06, even though it can take up to two years to finish. After being nominated by her tutor Grace Crosbie, Michelle received a nationally recognised Highly Commended certificate for her efforts both in theory and practical work.

Michelle said: “I have never been nominated or won anything before so I was thrilled to discover my work was good enough to win an award. I had some previous experience of hairdressing before I started college as my mum runs Brides of Rochdale and I helped out styling long hair at bridal shows. I am delighted to have done so well – I think this reflects my passion for hairdressing.”

Michelle is currently at college studying for an NVQ Level 3, but is also looking to take on a part time job in a local salon.

Hairdressing tutor Grace Crosbie said: “When Michelle won a college competition for styling long hair only three weeks into the first term, I knew she had an exceptional talent that could take her far in the industry. I nominated her not only because of her ability but also because of her enthusiasm and positive attitude. She stormed though the course with such determination and attention to detail she set a great example for others. To celebrate her achievement, we organised for Michelle to attend a demonstration by internationally acclaimed hairdresser Patrick Cameron, most famous for his work with long hair, which is also Michelle’s speciality.”
