Nine firefighters and a search and rescue dog from Greater Manchester, including operations commander Peter Stevenson from Rochdale fire station, are now on the ground in Haiti, assisting with the rescue operation following this week's earthquake.
The team took off from Gatwick at 6.40pm last night and travelled through the night to get to Haiti.
An advance party which included GMFRS and Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue Service staff made their way to Port-au-Prince in a small turbo-propeller plane. The team arrived on the ground by 8am local time, and there is an ongoing operation to transport the remaining Fire and Rescue Service personnel and equipment.
A GMFRS spokesperson said: "The message from our colleagues is that they are all fit and in good spirits, but keen to get working to help the people of Haiti."
