Ladies and gentlemen from across the borough gathered at the Rochdale Masonic Hall on Saturday night for a ‘Golden Evening’ with Dame Mary Peters DBE.

Dame Mary Peters, an Olympic Gold Medallist and Springhill Hospice patron, was the focal point of the celebration and fundraising dinner, raising much needed funds for the hospice.

The evening, organised by the Trustees of Springhill Hospice and supported by the Rochdale Masonic Social Committee, was attended by over 150 people.

Guests, including councillors and local business owners, enjoyed a six course meal, as well as entertainment courtesy of after dinner speaker and top comedian Martin Gold. Master of Ceremonies for the evening was Norman Prince.

Auction prizes at the fundraising dinner included a signed Manchester City shirt and a signed Paul Scholes shirt. There was also a raffle.

The amount raised from the evening will be confirmed in the coming days. The main sponsor of the event was Hanson Springs Ltd.

Dame Mary Peters, the 1972 Olympics Pentathlon Gold Medal Winner, will be at Springhill Hospice on Sunday afternoon (25 March) for an afternoon tea in aid of the hospice.

Christine Webb, Chief Executive of the Hospice, said: “Tonight is just one of the activities that Mary is involved in this weekend and I know tomorrow is very important to her as she will be at the hospice meeting patients and their families, a time that is so enjoyed by everyone.

“A huge thank you to Mary from everyone involved at Springhill Hospice, we very much appreciate your work for us and are so proud that you are our patron.”

Ms Webb added: “As always I would like to thank our sponsors for the financial support they have made for tonight, it really does make a difference to us.”
