Photographers invited to capture policing on the beat

Photographers are being invited to enter the GMP Museum Amateur Photography Competition to celebrate English Tourism Week 2013.

The competition launches on Tuesday 12 February and the theme is ‘On the Beat’.

The top ten photographs will be displayed in the museum and the winners will receive signed copies of Law and Order, which has been compiled by the Museum's Curator, Duncan Broady and showcases museum archival images. The overall winner will win a high street voucher to spend on camera equipment.

Claire Mayle, Museum Officer said: “English Tourism Week is a celebration of events showcasing the vibrancy of visitor experiences. There are some fantastic places to visit in Manchester and I’m delighted that we can play a part in it.

“The museum is home to thousands of images of policing through the ages and I’m excited to see how our competition brief is interpreted by budding photographers.”

The competition closes on Sunday 10 March 2013 and entries (including contact details) can be emailed to police.museum@gmp.police.uk or posted to GMP Museum, 57a Newton Street, Northern Quarter, Manchester, M1 1ET.

Last year, GMP’s Museum launched an iPhone app, which offers people an audio guide to complement their visit.

Voiced by Emmerdale star Chris Bisson, it has now been downloaded by more than 600 people. It guides visitors through the history of policing using facts, figures and quirky anecdotes.

Duncan Broady, Museum Curator said: “The museum continues to go from strength to strength and the launch of our app was a particularly exciting moment. To be able to bring the history of policing to life using the most modern of technology is something I never thought I’d see when I started this job 31 years ago.”
