Best Little Whorehouse in Rochdale

Date published: 08 April 2013

A comedy feature film, Best Little Whorehouse in Rochdale, is winning awards in film festivals.

The no-budget 105 minute feature film has won awards from Palm Beach International Film Festival and San Diego Film Festival and is an official selection at the London Independent Film Festival to be screened on the 21 April.

Starring Jeni Howarth Williams (Coronation Street, Emmerdale, Christmas Lights, Cold Blood) and Denice Hope (Christmas Lights, Life On Mars, Northern Lights, Royale Family) the film was a labour of love for multi-award winning writer-director-producer Ian Vernon.

Rochdale-born actor Hylton Collins, who has appeared in The Bill and Waterloo Road also plays a central part.

The challenge for Vernon was to write a comedy about sex that was entertaining and titillating but without nudity or...sex.

The plot is the story of Joan, married since a child and now a 40-year-old cleaner who needs to pay her mortgage.

She starts doing erotic phone calls because she’s good at that and doesn't earn enough money from cleaning. A new young cleaner then arrives and suggests that she opens a massage parlour. Joan goes for it in a way, but her house doesn't become a brothel. Two bungling cops think that something is going on, but it’s all titillation.

It’s out and out comedy and there is no sex, just innuendo.

This tiny production took over a year to shoot and was made with a crew of six. The end result was a comedy with heart that will make you laugh, and even cry.

Rochdale, home of the first ever co-operative society, now has a co-operative brothel.
