Date published: 24 June 2013

The Rotary Club of Middleton has recorded a rare Rotary double whammy by having two of their members being appointed as Rotary International District 1280 Governors in consecutive years.

Gerard ‘Ged’ Heatherington, who works for the Royal Bank of Scotland Group, Corporate and Commercial Division, will take up the 12 month role from 1 July 2013.

The role is to provide leadership, motivation and guidance to the 49 Rotary clubs in District 1280. The district covers the geographic area from Saddleworth to Frodsham and Helsby and includes five rotary clubs on the Isle of Man.

Ged lives in Hopwood, Heywood and was educated in Middleton at Cardinal Langley Grammar School. He is married to Carolyne, who is Deputy Branch Manager for the Royal Bank of Scotland. Their son, Kiefer, 18, also works for the Royal Bank of Scotland in Manchester.

Ged said:  "I am great believer in the Rotary motto ‘Service above Self’ and the annual Rotary International Theme for 2013 – 2014 ‘Engage Rotary, Change Lives’ is an excellent template to aid Rotarians focus their club’s efforts and subsequently the communities they look to support.

"It is an exciting time for Rotarians and like-minded people who are looking to become involved with Rotary, as clubs have a variety of projects that utilise their personal skills and make a positive impact on people’s lives that they come in contact with both locally or internationally. Remembering the most important three F’s rule of Rotary service, friendship, fun and more fun."

Stuart Sawle, Managing Director of Sysop, based on Green Lane, Heywood is following Ged as District 1280 Governor on 1 July 2014 and is looking forward to keeping the Rotary wheel moving forward in the North West.
