Date published: 17 February 2014

A man is in a critical condition after two men were assaulted at a flat on Market Place in Heywood.

Two men are reported to have forced their way into the flat in the early hours of Sunday 16 February 2014 and assaulted two men, both aged 28.

One of the men was taken to hospital with serious head injuries and remains in a critical but stable condition. The other man suffered minor injuries to his face and was also taken to hospital.

A 17-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of Section 18 assault and remains in police custody for questioning.

Police are appealing for information and witnesses.

Detective Inspector John Mazzolai said: "This was a nasty attack which has left one man with serious head injuries. We have one man in custody for the offence but are appealing to the public for any information that could help our investigation.

"If you were in the area in the early hours of Sunday morning and remember seeing anything suspicious or you have any information about who may be responsible we would be interested to hear from you.

"We have stepped up patrols in the area but would like to reassure the public that this is believed to be a targeted attack and the wider community shouldn't feel unnecessarily concerned or unsafe."

Anyone with information should call police on 0161 856 8701 or the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
