Oulder Hill Community School

Well done to the Year 7 Boys Basketball team who defeated Waterhead Academy by 32 to 28 points. Oulder Hill dominated the first two quarters, scoring some great baskets, and went into half time with an 18 point lead. The second two quarters were a lot closer and Waterhead came back into the game with some quick fire baskets.

Eventually Oulder Hill found some form in the last quarter and began to dominate proceedings with Zaki Bowden and Octavio Antonio proving too difficult to mark and scoring some vital points. Man of the match was Octavio Antonio who dominated the “Key” with his aerial presence and scored the majority of the Oulder Hill baskets. Well done to the full squad: Bradley Gregory, Zaki Bowden, Octavio Antonio, Aadam Latif, Harry Toogood, Dylan Brierley and Mohid Ul-Haq.

The Year 7 Boys Football team were unfortunate to be knocked out of their Cup competition by Holy Family. Well done to the players who took part and tried their best in testing weather conditions: Aadam Latif, Bradley Gregory, Ethan Haworth, Ethan Dale, Andrew Hill, Thomas Johnson, Oliver Godwin, Danny Collins, Joe Noon, Patrick Hadfield and Man-of-the-Match Steven Johnson.

The Year 9 Boys Football team played Falinge Park in what was to be a league decider with both teams having acquired the same points. Falinge dominated the opening half in very wet conditions and deservedly went in to the half time interval 1-0 up. The second half was a different story with Oulder Hill dominating possession and Brandon Coughlan and Daniel Cryer forcing several fine saves out of the Falinge goal keeper.

Unfortunately, Oulder Hill could not make their domination count and ended up losing the game 1-0. Man of the match was Kristian Kean for a rock steady performance at centre back. The team were as follows: Owain Harrison, Ben Howarth, Will Moore, Kristian Kean, Dominic Boothman, Brandon Kwei-Sutcliffe, Cameron Filkin, Jamie Ogden, Will Taylor, Daniel Cryer, Brandon Coughlan and Steven Nairn. Well done to all the boys for great performances throughout their season.

Congratulations to the Year 10 Boys Football team who beat Falinge 5-2.

The Oulder Hill Brass Ensemble played at Rochdale Town Hall last week in the Music For Youth Festival. In an event dominated by 40-strong brass bands, our own chamber group impressed with a programme of subtly and artistically realised music consisting of a Welsh hymn, a Disney tune (Let It Go from Frozen) and a jazzy New Orleans funeral march (from Live and Let Die). Given the mark of Highly Commended, the ensemble trounced previous years’ results in a very accomplished and varied performance, said by the adjudicator to be ‘near professional’. The ensemble were as follows: Rachael Ayres (cornet), Molly Williams (cornet), Chloe Thompson (tenor horn and vocal soloist), Rebecca Gill (tenor horn) and Ben Whitehead (tuba).

Year 10 Parents’ Evening takes place on Monday 31 March from 4:00 until 7:00pm. Parents should have received a letter from school regarding appointment times. If you have any queries regarding Parents’ Evening, please contact the school on 01706 645522.

Our next ‘Drop Everything and Read’ (DEAR) session will be taking place on Wednesday 2 April, a change to the previously advertised date, between 1:30 and 1:55pm. The aim of DEAR is to create a culture of reading for pleasure and to eradicate the stigma attached to reading. Students and staff will be taking part, and they will be encouraged to read from a variety of materials including books, newspapers and magazines. Wednesday 2 April is also International Children’s Book Day, which we will be celebrating by participating in DEAR.

School closes for the Easter Holidays on Friday 4 April. We hope you have a nice, relaxing break and we look forward to welcoming you back to school refreshed and ready to learn on Tuesday 22 April.
