Runners get set for Reservoir Race

Date published: 12 May 2014

Runners in Rochdale are getting set to take part in a challenging 5K off road race to raise money for the Diane Modahl Sports Foundation (DMSF).

The race will start at 7.00pm on Tuesday 20 May at the Oxford Pub, Whitworth Road, Rochdale, OL12 OSW and will comprise two laps around the Brownhouse Wham Reservoir, which is a mainly ‘off road’ and scenic course with an endurance-testing steep hill start. All participants will receive a prize on completing the course and the route will be marshalled with first aid assistance on hand.

Organised by local running club, Andems Runners and assisted by Rochdale Harriers, the Diane Modahl Commonwealth Trail 5K race will take place in honour of Diane, who was Commonwealth 800 Metres Champion in 1990.

All proceeds will go to Diane’s charity, the DMSF, a North West based initiative which was created to develop both world-class athletes and world-class people through an accessible sports programme for young people. It brings high quality sporting and educational programmes to young people who may not otherwise have been given the opportunity to develop their talents. With over 100 children already having benefited from the charity, Diane and her team are constantly seeking funding to further develop its work across the region's schools.

Speaking ahead of the race, Diane said: “This will be a fun run for those wishing to take in the sights of the beautiful Brownhouse Wham Reservoir. It is a great opportunity for all local runners to come out, stretch their legs and take part in an event that will ultimately help many young people achieve their sporting ambitions through the DMSF.

“We are grateful to Andems Runners and Rochdale Harriers for hosting this event in our honour and look forward to seeing many people turn out on the night.”

The entrance fee is £4.00 to affiliated runners, £6.00 to unaffiliated athletes when booked in advance with a cheque payable to ‘Andems Runners DCRR’ to Andy O’Sullivan MBE, 40 Crowshaw Drive, Rochdale, OL12 OSR.
Entrance will be £1.00 extra on the night.
