Lord Coe meeting
This week Mr Stuart Pidgeon, Headteacher at Redwood School was invited to the media launch of the International Inspiration Programme event at Sport England in London to talk about the successes of our links with our Egyptian schools and the legacy of 2012 for sport and youngsters with disabilities. Claire had the opportunity to discuss Redwood`s work with Lord Coe. A great honour for the school.

Sports Personality & Review of the Year
It is now only a few days until our Sports Review of the Year Award evening which will be held Thursday 10 July at 7pm in The Gracie Fields Theatre. The event WILL go ahead despite any disruption to the school day which may take place during the day. It will be an evening to celebrate the sporting and other achievements of our young people and share in some amazing memories from the year. Come along for a great family night.

Ministerial Visit to Redwood
The Parliamentary Undersecretary Rt Hon Edward Timpson visited Redwood to sample the inclusive sporting opportunities we provide our students. The visit included the Minister and the Chair of Governors observing hydro activities, a swimming lesson, a rebound therapy session and a trampoline demonstration by Kallum in Y11 which was excellent. Our Sports Leaders, Garry, Kallum, Paul and Shane gave the Minister a tour of the facilities. This visit highlights the key role Redwood has locally and nationally in Project Ability, Health and Well Being plans and other key initiatives. More details can be seen on our website.

Industrial Action – Thursday 10 July
Parents and carers will be aware of the industrial action being planned by some trade union associations which will take place on Thursday 10th July. Letters were sent home on Friday 4th July, with details of the implications for Redwood School. This information will also be posted on our school website.

Governors at Student Council meeting
A number of governors attended the Student Council meeting this week at which a variety of issues were discussed to further develop the school. Another example of the governors commitment to the young people of Redwood School.

KS3
It’s all about RedAid at Redwood school this week; pupils in Key Stage 3 have been very busy preparing in a variety of ways. Mr Jackson’s tutor group have been making Gruffalo crispy cakes, while Miss Roger’s group have been making rosettes and red, white & blue bunting.

Mrs Lansom-Smith’s group have tie-dyed their own t-shirts and made red, white & blue hats. They kindly made a massive breakfast eating eggs laid by Mrs Lansom-Smith’s hens Gloria & Eggatha. To say thank you to all the personal carers for all their help this year.

Pupils have also been making a selection of cakes & biscuits and loom bands to sell.

On Monday we visited Chill Factore to take part in a reward trip. Our young leaders got to take part in a Sit Ski experience on the big slope. Everybody enjoyed the day and the highlight was Shane screaming as he descended the slope.

On Tuesday our young leaders visited Meanwood primary school to take part in their school sports week. Shane helped Redwood staff in organising and running mini games and also took some great pictures.

On Friday 27 June a group of Key Stage 3 pupils took part in the annual Manchester Disability Games, held at Leigh sports Village. Haider, Daniels, Lewis I, Partick and Muhammed T took part in various sporting activities including 100m sprint, 400m relay, long jump and shot put. It was a long and busy day but all students did a fabulous job of representing Rochdale in the games and came home with a well deserve medal.

Thank you to everyone who has been kind enough to donate to RedAid so far we really have had some good quality brand new and nearly new items donated for our stalls.

The bridging year had an excellent coffee morning with the current Bridging year students and the new Bridging Year students, parents and carers.

SSC students Nathaniel and Ben joined the owl Friday craft group this week and produced some lovely owl key rings well done lads. Kelsey chose some lovely fabrics for her key ring and loved her finished item.

Some students were lucky enough to visit Manchester United for the day. They had a tour of the grounds and even got to go in the changing rooms!

Mr Alcocks tutor group went on a cultural morning listening to music about the four seasons at the Bridgewater hall. It was a new experience from some students and they all behaved excellently whilst representing the school.

This week some of our students interviewed our visiting student teacher:

Ian- What’s your name? Phil
Joshua- What did you enjoy most about being in 6th form? I enjoyed going into different subject lessons - I’ve been in Art and some Food lessons, and seeing how maturely you all treat each other.
Habib- When will you qualify as a teacher? On Friday
Ian -Which subject do you teach? I started teaching Drama but now I teach English
Joshua - How well have you got to know students and staff? Very well in 2 days. I got to know lots of names and have made some new friends.
Habib - What don’t you like about 6th form? Nothing.

Welcome back students and staff from Ibiza!

Apart from partying the nights away and commiserating England’s poor performance in The World Cup, students enjoyed hanging out at the pool; some even joined in with water polo. There was plenty of entertainment, including an African Acrobatic show.
Some of the students comments about the trip:

Joshua says – After much thought, and much more, it was somewhat pleasant and kind of fun and somewhat irritating.
Jade – It’s been a very wonderful experience, especially as it’s my first residential. I had a great birthday with all my friends.
Thomas S– I have enjoyed the entertainment, fun in the pool and football with my friends.
Maria – It’s been great but sad because it’s the last one.
Jake – I love hanging around with my friends and Ibiza is fantastic.
Nathan – The holiday was fantastic and I really enjoyed being in the pool with my friends.
Tom N - The holiday has been exquisitely fantastic even though the England football team was abysmal.
