Charity Gala Concert for Cyril’s big day!

Date published: 30 May 2008

Sir Cyril Smith MBE will be celebrating his 80th Birthday on 28 June at Rochdale Town Hall doing what he does best, raising money for charity.

Rochdale MP Paul Rowen is organising a Gala Concert and the money raised will go to Sir Cyril’s favourite charity, ‘Rochdale Childer.’ Tickets are only £10 (£5 for children) – this includes a Rochdale supper of Potato and Cheese and Onion Pie.

Sir Cyril said: “I wasn’t going to organise a party but was talked into it by Paul. I am looking forward to meeting friends old and new at our beautiful Town Hall, where I have spent many of my happiest times.

"The entertainment will be superb and I have insisted that all our acts have a Rochdale connection. I know people are talking about ‘Britain’s got talent’ at the moment – this concert will prove that Rochdale has talent!

"I am also pleased to be raising money for Rochdale Childer, a charity that I help set up and am still president for.”

Artists already confirmed include the Rochdale Youth Orchestra, our award-winning bands and comedian Jimmy Cricket. There are also many celebrity surprises on this very special fundraising night.

Paul Rowen said: “I am pleased that we are able to celebrate the remarkable life of Sir Cyril. This is going to be the hottest ticket in town.

"We are hoping to raise as much money as possible so please get in touch.

"We have got quite a few surprises for Cyril on the night and I can’t wait.”
