The Quayside Hot Stompers

Date published: 12 June 2008

The Quayside Hot Stompers are unusual due to the fact that they are led by Pianist Tom Culbert a 'belly roller' if ever there was one!

Their visit to Castleton was just another example of Jazz provided by the ebullient organiser Terry Eastwood.

Accompanying the band was the 'Diva' of raw Jazz/Blues Delia Glaister who was prominent throughout the concert. A long first set featured a variety of arrangements including Culbert's 'Mister Jelly Lord', Barrie Marshall's clarinet solo on the little played 'Staines', ' Way Down Yonder', 'Papa Di Da Da' and Beiderbecke's 'Rhythm Kings'. Before Glaister took centre stage with 'Basin Street Blues', Downhearted Blue', 'Everybody Loves My Baby' and 'Someday Sweetheart'. In the latter three numbers the band was accompanied by ex-Rochdale trumpeter Eric Mainwaring who was visiting the club from his home in Canada.

A short second set featured the trombone of Matthew Woodhouse on 'Memphis Blue' and Culbert on 'Georgia Cakewalk' along with popular favourites 'Piggly Wiggly' and 'Give Me Your Telephone Number' rhythmically backed by Geraldine Duckles on Banjo/Guitar.

A driving third set had the rafters ringing with Alan Duckles cornet on 'Devenport Blues' and he partnered Glaister on 'Kiss Me Sweet'. Delia admitted 'That's My Weakness Now' and jammed around with Woodhouse in 'Trombone Trolley'. 'Portugese Love Song' slowed down the tempo before 'Dr Jazz' alias the Quayside brought another successful Jazz on Sunday to a close.
